The Exhibits Technician is responsible for maintaining and operating the Science Center’s technology driven exhibit program, including state-of-the-art digitally controlled projection systems, media driven exhibit displays, A/V systems, and lighting systems as well as the technology infrastructure throughout the building that is necessary to deliver a world-class visitor experience. The successful candidate will also play a role in identifying appropriate technology solutions for educational programs, visitor experiences, and back-office solutions.  

 

Troubleshooting, problem-solving, and investigating/researching a wide variety of technology solutions is a must-have quality for interested candidates. The ideal candidate will be familiar with how to diagnose and repair relays, media players, interactive displays, and simple to medium circuits. The successful candidate should also have a strong teamwork mindset, a strong work ethic, be capable of working under tight time constraints and in demanding show delivery conditions and have a passion for delivering phenomenal user experiences for learners of all ages/abilities. 


SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Maintain and operate the Science Center’s technology driven exhibit program, including state-of-the-art digitally controlled projection systems, media driven exhibit displays, A/V systems, and lighting systems as well as the technology infrastructure throughout the building that is necessary to deliver a world-class visitor experience. 

  • Provide technical expertise and general support in the design, build, and maintenance of Science Center exhibits and programs. 

  • Oversee the installation and deinstallation of technology and A/V components within exhibits and program/learning spaces. 

  • Perform start-of-day maintenance on exhibits, theater, and A/V equipment as necessary to produce the highest quality of continuous exhibit and show performance. 

  • Troubleshoot and remedy technology problems that arise during startup or operation, including general computer, BrightSign, and CMS problems.  

  • Perform repairs and adjustments to technology components in exhibits, theaters, classrooms, and program spaces. 

  • Oversee vendor work where they have responsibility for operating, maintaining, and/or repairing technology systems.  

  • Monitor exhibits and shows for audio, video, and effects quality and make adjustments as needed. 

  • Perform safety checks of all systems and ensure that any mechanical effects are in safe working condition. 

  • File all maintenance reports in a timely manner. 

  • Ensure that all control room and technology related back-of-house spaces are clean, neat, and well organized and that all elements visible to the general public are always “show ready”. 

  • Ensure that all equipment and materials are handled, stored, and maintained in the best possible manner and in accordance with manufacturer/integrator guidelines to ensure best show quality and maximum length of life. 

  • Report any issues to the Director of Facilities or Director of Operations as needed. 

  • Set up, operate, and tear down A/V and technology solutions for programs and special events, including: 

  • Set up speakers, audio consoles, microphones, lighting fixtures, and projectors. 

  • Adjust audio, video, lighting settings for programs and events. 

  • Operate all equipment during the event. 

  • Mix audio consoles. 

  • Tear down equipment after the event has concluded. 

  • Work with Operations and Event Sales to develop and execute plans to meet client needs. 

  • Provide input to program managers to ensure show continuity, smooth show entry and exit and maximum showmanship. Train operations and program staff how to use control panels, touch screens, mics, and other technology and A/V systems. 

  • Contribute to identifying effective team-based solutions to technology problems, issues, and opportunities.  

  • Act as a team player and provide subject matter expertise within the team.

 Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Immersive Technologies, or a related field (or similar experience).   

  • Exceptional problem-solving, troubleshooting, and communication skills. 

  • Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), learning management systems, and/or other content management systems/database management is a plus. 

  • Strong consideration would be given to applicants who demonstrate comfort with contributing to the development and/or facilitation of exhibit experiences and educational programs that utilize technology. 

  • Ability to work rotating shifts and on short notice. 

  • Ability to be reachable to respond to client’s needs and requests. 

  • Ability to work weekend, evening, and holiday hours as business needs demand.

Requirements 

Successful completion of a criminal background checks, including checks through Pennsylvania State Police, Pennsylvania Child Abuse Registry, Federal Criminal History Record (fingerprinting), and completion of PA Act 126 Child Abuse & Mandatory Reporting training course.
